In my program, some students have multiple behavioral episodes a day due to over-stimulation in the classroom environment. Having a sensory room would provide a safe and calming place to relax, which would help de-escalate behaviors and enable them to get back to learning and instructional activities in the classroom. Sensory rooms facilitate the learning and practice of stress management skills for students whose anxiety interferes with their ability to function throughout the school day. Many of our students with TBI and cerebral palsy have limited, if any, control of their extremities. Sensory rooms can provide an interactive environment to improve motor skills and provide great cause and effect learning. Devices can be operated with switches that are attached to a student’s wheelchair or placed in their hand. This allows students to be in control of music, lighting and colors, and enables him/her to explore tactile experiences and and practice skills.
