As a science teacher, I find my scholars have had limited classroom experiences with exploring science concepts through investigations. My 7th grade scholars need many opportunities to wonder, question and investigate that is naturally involved in the practice of science. Additionally, middle school students, in general, tend to struggle with organization. As their adolescent brains are developing and their desire for social interactions and novelty are strong it is challenging for them to make sure their work is secure and separated from other content classes. I would like to use science notebooks as a way to teach to students to be self-directed and intentional in their learning. For me, science is an amazing area of study because it allows me to be curious and ask questions. By implementing science notebooks, I will be able to provide my students the room they need to ask questions, wonder, predict, puzzle out conclusions, and take notes that will help them in learning new material. These notebooks will also aid student organization by keeping learning materials in one consistent location. The tape will allow students to securely add graphs, data tables, and learning resources to their notebook. The pencils and markers will ensure that scholars never miss a learning opportunity due to missing a writing tool. The folders will be an efficient way for students to turn in completed work and for me to return it graded. These notebooks will provide a means of communication between me and my scholars as well as serve as a living document of their own learning journey.
