In an effort to improve student learning outcomes and provide a supportive and interactive learning environment, I have selected a variety of materials that will serve to build the foundational skills necessary for my students to be successful in all academic subject areas. Since all of my students are English Language Learners, it is critical that they receive a strong development in language and reading skills. However, it is equally important that they receive additional academic support in all other subject areas as well. These materials will give students a chance to partake in an assortment of activities that will build skills in phonics, phonemic awareness, and fluency. Students will work on tasks that develop and enhance their vocabulary knowledge, writing skills, and comprehension skills. The materials selected will also assist students in developing critical thinking skills as they read a variety of fiction and nonfiction text that will spark their imagination and develop their knowledge about real world events, concepts, and phenomena. Students will have an opportunity to participate in teacher guided groups, individual and partner projects, collaborative group tasks, and hands-on engaging real world activities where they will explore math concepts and investigate science discoveries and phenomena. Students will gain insight and a wealth of knowledge through reading materials that integrates subject matter and that will help students make connections to the world beyond the four walls of the classroom.
