  • Snacks and Supplies

    Funded Mar 7, 2022

Thank you very much for funding my classroom with "Snacks and Supplies" that were desperately needed. The students were able to take snacks with them on their field trips to Kupaaina and Kualoa thanks to your generous donation. They were also able to have snacks and drinks when they did not bring any from home.

My students were surprised by the amount and variety of snacks that were delivered to their class. Their eyes were wide in amazement because this type of thing never happens! Surprisingly my students were also grateful to see cleaning supplies and disinfectant wipes because we were out of them. Our next steps are to eat all of the snacks and drink all the drinks you provided. At the end of the year, we will clean our classroom in preparation for the summer!”

    With gratitude,

    Mrs. Shinagawa

  • Passport to Global Art

    Funded Aug 26, 2021

My fifth grade students were so excited to get new art materials. Thanks to your generous donation we were able to begin our global art passports. So far we have created art pieces from North America, Central America, Mexico, and Canada. We have learned about value, perspective, shape. line and space. We have also explored various art media such as watercolor, acrylic, chalk, pastels and even added sequins to our Carnival Headpieces. They created abstract sculptures out of wire hangers, nylons, and glue. They created their own wrapping paper and card and gave them to their parents for Christmas.

When the students first saw the art materials they squealed with excitement. They wait in anticipation as I pass out the new items YOU bought for them. They are so ecstatic on Tuesdays because they know its our day for art.

We will continue our journey around the world as we take on Asia next. We will create Japanese Pagodas and Indian Mehndi art pieces.”

    With gratitude,

    Mrs. Shinagawa

  • Flexible Seating, Digital Learning

    Funded Aug 6, 2021

"Flexible Seating, Digital Learning" was my first donors choose project. Your donation has made a huge impact on the learning in my classroom. Having rolling desks has allowed my students to have flexible seating and the ability to learn where and when it's convenient. It has been especially helpful during social distancing because my students can now learn outside! My students are able to meet outside with other teachers and service providers which allows conversation and learning to take place. Specifically my students have been able to receive tiered services outside while I work with a small group inside the classroom. I have been able to annotate math lessons using my Apple pencil with my ipad as it is on the tablet stand. The speakers and earphones have helped to improve the auditory technology aspect of learning. When I play videos now, students at the back of the room can hear clearly.

The students were excited to see all of the materials that were donated to the class. They couldn't believe that anonymous donors helped to make their classroom fun! I think I was most excited because normally the items I purchase would be paid for out of my own pocket. It was nice to enjoy the generosity of others.

We will continue to use the items that you purchased for our class to help with our learning. Our next project includes using Apple pencils to create digital selfies to go along with our narrative writing pieces. We have SBA testing coming up so the headphones will come in handy as well as while working on our Xtra math lessons online.”

    With gratitude,

    Mrs. Shinagawa

It is imperative that I have students engage in small group discussions and receive instruction SAFELY. Students love sharing their ideas with their peers and learning from each other. Mobile desks and stools will allow students to work together and still maintain their physical distance. They will be able to work in any part of the classroom or even go outside instead of being in one fixed location. This will be a great opportunity for students to receive peer feedback in their writing pieces or to receive small group intervention instruction. Flexible seating and headphones with a microphone will allow students to record their oral fluency passages independently. Flexible seating will help me to differentiate instruction and meet the needs of my unique students whereby rolling desks will allow for flexibility in the learning environment. I can challenge students who have mastered a skill or offer reteaching for students who need more time. The larger mobile desk will allow me or other service providers (Counselor, Special Education teacher, Interventionist, or Occupational Therapist) to easily work with one student or a small group in the class or just outside in the fresh air allowing for appropriate distancing. Providing visual and auditory aids are important to address various learning styles. Recently our grade level received an iPad, TV, and Apple TV. A tablet stage will be used to project instructional materials to students from the iPad and an Apple pencil will allow me to digitally annotate them for my students to view. The speakers will provide a means to share audio from videos embedded in our literacy program and other sites. Thank you in advance for providing my students with the tools and equipment to be successful in this digital era and for providing choices for flexible learning environments.
