The photo I chose shows a staff member challenging a student in push-ups! My students are creative, fun-loving, curious adolescents, who are like their peers, except that they often come from troubled home lives. They struggle with trusting people, and are usually hyper-vigilant and anxious. Our school is a therapeutic program, where counselors are available during the day. The students come from surrounding towns in the local area, and all receive bus transportation, and 90% of them qualify for the free lunch program.
Our school has one movie projector for four classrooms, so it is difficult to plan lessons and also be spontaneous about showing educational videos to the students. They received Chromebooks this year, but watching videos separately makes it difficult to lead a class discussion and check for understanding during the viewing. My students tend to grasp new ideas more easily when they can see pictures or video and share the experiences and thoughts as a whole group.
