  • Be Cool, Code at School

    Funded Oct 17, 2018

Our class had begun our coding journey. We start out learning about coding by making cars. The materials we used were cups, rubber bands and straws. The objective was to get the car to travel a specific distance. Then the students went back and made changes to their cars.

The next stage in our coding development was to do courses on Code. .Org. We made connections between our car and coding. If the project did not run exactly the way it was supposed to, we went back and made changes until it did exactly what it was intended to do.

Currently there are students that are working on a Google coding course in a club. These students meet at lunch and after school to work on their Java Script projects.

All of this was possible because of your generous support .

  • Coding and Robotics

    Funded Oct 16, 2017

Our class gets to code with their robots about twice a week. The coding allows them to meet standards in Math, Science and Language Arts. My goal was to spark an interest in the STEM curriculum with all of my students and I can honestly say it has. My students are much more committed to getting good grades to ensue they can apply for STEM magnet schools. More importantly, my students are engaged more in all of their lesson. I believe they now understand how everything is connected. For instance, they know that reading comprehension is vital if they are to understand technology text. These robots are a great example of the community giving back to those who are less fortunate.”

  • Basketball and Fitness

    Funded Oct 21, 2016

The students at our school enjoy playing organized sports, unfortunately not many of them are on teams. The students in my class decided to form a basketball league. They got other classes and teachers involved and requested another teacher and myself handle the administrative responsibilities.

We used the basketballs that you kindly donated to explicitly teach the game during our physical education classes. Since we had enough high quality basketballs, no student was ever just standing and watching. One of our goals as teachers is to have every student moving constantly during physical education. We accomplished this goal during our basketball unit since every kid had a ball to practice new skills with. They were not as intimidating since the students had a chance to practice individually, with a partner and in a small group.

The students opened up their league to all of the students in the school. Also, the students picked their own teams and names because we all agreed the focus of the league should be having fun and not just winning. We used our lunch period to play. It was incredible to see the student engagement. They rooted for friends, check the schedule for games and occasionally let the referee know they had missed a call.”

  • Get Active: Making Sure Every Student has Access to P E.

    Funded Mar 29, 2016

    Dear Donors,

Thank you for the soccer balls for my class. My students now have the opportunity to learn the skills associated with the game of soccer. One of the goals for an effective physical educational lesson is to have every student moving. With all of the balls my class received, this is now possible. Additionally, I am now able to give immediate feedback to numerous students during the lesson. This allows a student to work on the skill immediately, so they can work towards mastery.

My students also use the balls to practice their skills during recess. The students in my class often form small groups at recess to work on the different skills that were taught in previous lessons, by practicing on their own my students are working on developing social skills in the areas of collaboration and sportsmanship.”

  • Computer Programming Using New Media

    Funded Oct 13, 2015

My students and I would like to thank you for your generous donation to our classroom. We purchased a Microsoft Surface Pro.

An important part of my job is to ensure my students are on the track to be college bound or career ready . The students use the Surface Pro to practice their computer coding skills. Hopefully, I have planted the seed for some of my students to major in computer science when they reach college. And, if some of my students choose not to go to college they still may be able to find employment as a computer programmer.

My students all just completed the Hour of Code and are now enrolled in the twenty hour code course. I teach at an urban school and my students would never have been exposed to computer programming had it not been for your donation.”

    With gratitude,

    Mr. Mcbride

  • Our Learning Lab

    Funded Oct 10, 2014

Thank you for the Mac Book Pro. The students in my class can now access the Accelerated Reader program throughout the day. This program is vital to my students and their success with the new Common Core Standards. The students must be able to read books that are at their instructional level before they can be expected to master the more difficult expository text. Chevron's gift is going to help me scaffold their reading instruction so that by the end of the year all of my students will be able to comprehend grade level expository text.”

    With gratitude,

    Mr. Mcbride

My students are wonderful and are very curious about the world around them. Sometimes I feel that some of my students fall behind in lessons, especially math, because they have not had enough exposure to the academic language. Additionally, if they do fall behind, it is hard for me to catch all of them up since there are thirty students in the class. I would like my students to be able to work by themselves or in small groups when they are struggling with language that keeps them from accessing the curriculum.
