Back to School Basics
Funded Oct 24, 2019As a result of your generous donation, all of our 4th and 5th graders were given materials that will help them achieve their writing goals for this year's FSA Writing assessment. During our Writers' Workshop, students use their binders to organize their anchor charts, rubrics, as well as their informational and opinion essays. Our students are English Language Learners, struggling readers, and consequently, struggling writers. The Writers' Workshop also gives our students a forum to collaborate with their peers to comprehend complex text and exchange ideas that are eventually translated into a writing piece. This helps develop my students comprehension skills and oral language and also boosts their confidence. Thank you so much, Donors Choose!”

Funded Mar 27, 2018Last school year turned out to be an amazing year! Fourth grade students who had been struggling, disinterested readers joined a book club that was started thanks to the books we purchased with our grant. And boy did the Cricut machine help bring learning to life! We created student focused bulletin boards that allowed them to proudly display their writing. In fact, the Cricut was instrumental in our first ever school film festival. We created an alternative ending to the story "Because of Winn Dixie" and used the machine to design the backdrop of Ms. Gloria's yard. When we presented the film to parents and other community members, we did so in our make shift movie theater, which was also decorated by cutouts from the Cricut.
As the instructional reading coach for the school, I work with all students in grades K-5. When I originally wrote the grant, I had in mind a specific group of fourth graders who needed to improve their comprehension as well as oral language development. This year, the enthusiasm has spread to students and teachers of other grade levels. The entire school has benefited from the use of the books and the Cricut machine, thanks to our gracious donors.”

This classroom project was brought to life by Ripple.Flat Stanley on the Red Carpet
Funded Oct 21, 2015The Flat Stanley books we purchased were used in a schoolwide initiative that involved the areas of English Language Arts, Math, Science and Social Studies. Across all the grades of our school, you could see students using Flat Stanley to study character traits, learn about story elements, and even discover their own point of view. Flat Stanley and some students worked together in our school garden when they learned about composting and charting the growth of various plants.
As you can see, reading is a cross curricular affair at our school. The Flat Stanley project allowed students to make personal connections with the character in school and also at home with their families. Many students took pictures of themselves and Flat Stanley on adventures together. Your donation helped students in Kindergarten through Grade 5 enjoy a new class set of books. Our small school has not had a media specialist in four years and consequently, our classroom libraries have been lacking, to say the least. With your help, each classroom received books that were appropriate for the grade or reader's ability.
As a culminating activity, a few of our students will be documenting their Flat Stanley experiences through a short film which will be shown to other students, parents and community members. Your support of our project will give these students an experience that I'm sure they'll never forget.”

Lights, Camera, Action: A Literary Film Festival
Funded Apr 9, 2012I can't begin to tell you how thankful I am your your contribution to my classroom. What began as an enrichment activity for my students turned into experience that I'm certain will stay with my students for a very long time.
Since my goal wasn't reached until towards the end of the school year, I had to make some adjustments to my grant proposal. Since I wanted to teach my 2nd and 3rd graders the art of script writing and reinforcing their understanding of plot, setting, character's perspective and theme, I had them adapt their own version of the Velveteen Rabbit. We also incorporated writing into our 2nd grade social studies curriculum and 3rd grade math curriculum and wrote scripts for stories in these subject areas as well. In essence, my class produced 3 amazing films which were viewed by parents, students and teachers at our Class Film Festival.
Thank you very much for the impact you've made on my class.
PS. My students developed a LOVE for Roald Dahl and the Fantastic Mr. Fox”
