  • Wiggling Fourth Graders Looking for Fun Sensory Resources

    Funded Nov 30, 2022

We wanted to take time to thank you for donating to our project. We have been LOVING the new resources. For example about a third of our class have chosen to sit on the wiggle seats/disco seats to focus in the meeting area or on our seats. All the children share, it helps me sit still for longer amount of time.

Another example is the use of all the fidgets. The students have been using them during the lessons with the me or during independent work. These fidgets helps focus the students on the lessons. They are able to focus for a longer amount of time. They also learned self awareness by learning the difference of playing with a fidget verses using the fidget to build a stronger awareness to what's going on around them. Students also like to hold items when they are upset and it helps them calm down.

The next steps for my classroom is for kids to determine times they need a fidget and when they don't. It's all about having self awareness and self management skills to work well in a classroom environment. We are so grateful for your gifts to us.”

    With gratitude,

    Ms. Stacey

  • An Apple (laptop) A Day Leads Students To A Productive Day

    Funded Aug 17, 2015

Thank you so much for the Mac Air we received. My students were overjoyed to have the laptop in the classroom. They said that the company was very generous to help us out in the classroom. They said they hoped you know much they love using the laptop and it helps them learn when we do power point presentations.

Because it's portable they are able to use it at their own desks or tables. My students are truly engaged when I let them use the laptop at their tables. I work with English Language Learners and they need constant visuals throughout the day to help guide them through the lessons. The laptop provides them the bridge for learning. The laptop also helps me as their teacher, because I am able to use it at school and plan with it at home. In the past, I could only create my presentations at school. Given the time it takes to prepare slide shows and lessons, this is extremely beneficial. One of our most recent activities was a shared writing lesson. We studied a poem, "Things to Do if You Are a Subway." After we studied the poem, they created their own poems with other items or animals. Many of them don't know what a real race car looked like, so the laptop really help them visualized their creative poems. They were also able to utilize the thesaurus to build their descriptive vocabulary.

I am excited for the upcoming year because I know we have the laptop to enrich our lessons. The students were recently studying igloos. We were able to watch a teacher tube video on how an igloo is put together in the Arctic.

The students becoming connected to the world around them. Many times they don't get the opportunity to leave Chinatown. You are opening doors of opportunity for them. Some of them are developing passions, they are just recently learning about due to the use of our new laptop. I'm looking forward to watching their faces and hearing their ideas grow, as I share different life experiences through technology with my class.

Thank you for taking the time to read over my request for a computer and being so thoughtful to help children in a low income area. We are lacking in supplies, which makes us appreciate every tool we have.”

    With gratitude,

    Ms. Stacey

My students are from a low economic background. They appreciate everything that is given to them. In order to provide, their parents work very long hours and don't have too much time to spend with their children. Quite often, language becomes a barrier in communicating with one another. It's important for me to bridge the gap between them. Their parents have a dream for their children. They want them to succeed and have a better life. They realize that their children can do that through the American Education System. I never saw students have such drive and determination. The vision in our school is to encourage communication and speaking skills. In order to do that we need to provide rich language experiences to build students' confidence in the English language.
