Our wonderful students deal with so much more than a child should have to deal with. Ninety-six percent of our 500 students get free or reduced lunches. We are one of, if not the most highly impacted schools in our district. Many families are mobile with many living in motels. Families struggle to pay rent and put food on the table. So it is kind of silly for we teachers to expect families to supply us with supplies for the classroom. I am committed to this school. I have been here for 15 years. I grew up in an environment like my students are. I know that I can't control what's happening to my little ones outside the classroom, but I'm going to do my best to teach them while they are with me. Being poor should not be an indicator of success. School saved me. If it wasn't for good teachers and a safe environment at school I don't think I would be a teacher today. I would gladly give all I have financially for my kids, but I have three of my own.
