My students come from very low income families, many have little to no family involvement. Unlike most schools we cannot ask our students to come prepared with supplies from home. Many days we have no pencils or paper for our students, and while most days I am able to utilize my resources, it is so incredibly sad to not be able to provide my students with basic needs to help them escape their troubles and embrace their time in the art room. We would benefit from having fresh supplies so that these students could create masterpieces - staples to hang them with...markers that aren't dried up to work with....items that shouldn't be a luxury in an art room - but that should simply be part of their education - in the same way that they would be in a suburban classroom. It would mean the world to these kids to simply be able to come to class and grab a pencil, and not have to have the shame of asking and being made to feel inferior and unprepared. They need pastels to draw and explore with and sharpies to make their work jump off the page. I want to provide them with these options. I so appreciate you taking the time to read this and consider us.
