Books for Bright Young Readers
Funded Jan 1, 2020Teaching middle school can be incredibly difficult. Many of my eleven and twelve year old students are reading below grade level, or learning English. As an educator, it is important that I provide them with texts that are both engaging and appropriately challenging. With your help, we received 30 beautiful hard cover copies of the contemporary version of an Indian epic,"Ramayana: Divine Loophole." This book will engage my struggling readers and make this Indian epic come alive.
Our upcoming unit, A Hero's Journey, will teach my students about the familiar story of transformation that every hero in literature experiences. "Ramayana" is a stunningly illustrated retelling of the Hindu story of Rama, told in words and vivid pictures by Sanjay Patel. This ancient myth is organized in three phases typical of the hero's journey: we meet the hero Rama in his ordinary world; when he embarks on an epic journey to defend what is good and defeat what is evil; and finally he returns home able to become a king after overcoming the obstacles of his quest. At the end of this unit, students will use their knowledge of this genre to create an original hero's journey.
Despite their struggles with reading, my students are eagerly awaiting for this unit to start. They have already started flipping through the book to take closer looks at the illustrations. One of my students is especially excited to read "Ramayana" as it is a story he is already familiar with, and one he grew up listening to. Reading in my classroom won't be easy, but "Ramayana" will captivate all my students.”
With gratitude,
Mrs. Rieger
Books for Bright Young Readers
Funded Mar 3, 2020We are so thankful for the generous donation and are so excited to receive these beautiful books!
This will make such a difference in my students’ learning. They will absolutely enjoy reading this book especially since they’ll now be able to hold the books, flip through the pages, and see the characters come alive through the illustrations.
My students will be thrilled to hear that this project has been funded, and even more thrilled to know they’ll be able to read Ramayana: Divine Loophole.”

Funded Sep 5, 2016I am excited to share with you the changes I've noticed in my classroom since receiving the new resources. My disorganized middle school students have made some changes!
Transitions are smoother, students are taking the initiative to organize their table groups, and I'm organized.
Table captains quickly distribute binders in the beginning of the period and return binders at the end of the period. I rarely have to remind students to do so. Protocols like homework turn in or passing out worksheets have become simpler. A drawer labeled "homework" and "resources" make these routines quick and simple.
We have you to thank for these changes to my classroom. Thank you so much for your generous contributions to my classroom.”

Funded Jul 30, 2016I am so excited to share with you my students' reaction to the stools and their affect on learning in my classroom.
They were surprised, humbled, and excited by your generosity.
They instantly gravitated towards the novelty of the Hokki Stools and the idea that the stools could help them learn. They were reflective and explained why the Hokki Stools would be beneficial to them. Others explained why they didn't think Hokki Stools could benefit them, but knew it might help their friends.
The idea that everyone learns differently stuck with my students, and though many students wanted to try to the stool, they shared the new resource with those that needed it most and continue to do so throughout the semester.
Thank you, again, for the wonderful resource. We are so lucky to have such great support from friends and family.”
With gratitude,
Mrs. Rieger
