My students are English Language Learners in a Title I school. They come to school eager and ready to learn each day, but most do not have resources at home to support their literacy skills. The students have wonderful parental support, but with the primary language spoken at home being Spanish, parents often feel they cannot contribute to the academic success of their children. There are few opportunities for parents to read with their children, especially in their native language due to the lack of Spanish and bilingual resources available. I work with a group of enthusiastic parents who are willing to do everything they can to support their child academically, but neither they nor I have access to engaging resources necessary to create a reading environment at home.
