My students are coming to me with major gaps in their math skills, which then translates into poor End-of-Grade test scores and yearly averages. In my class we work on gaps as well as current grade level work. Besides the obvious need for math skills is the organization factor. Many students do not see the need to put all the work for a particular problem (such as long division) in the same place. This is especially true of students with RTI / IEP plans due to attention difficulties. Even though I give students composition books and tell them daily to turn to the "next clean sheet", many will randomly open the notebook and start working, resulting in a lack of continuity in the lessons. In the past, I have used various techniques, such as using .5cm graph paper (helps keep problems lined up) and paper divided into sections to keep multi step problems together. I am seeing the need this year for a more direct method of organization. As I see students from all three grade levels and all six teams, the goal is for the techniques taught here to transfer to their other classes.
