  • Native Tales

    Funded Dec 4, 2024

Thank you so much for helping me to create a more diverse lesson so that all students will be included and appreciated. Students will now have high interest books about Native American tales, and you have made this possible to bring a multitude of culture into my classroom. Thank you very much! You are appreciated.”

    With gratitude,

    Mrs. Wong

  • Better Readers, Helpers, and Testers

    Funded Feb 23, 2023

I want to thank you for your generous donation which allowed me to buy social emotional games for my students.

The students engaged in serious topics which sparked many enlightened conversations. Many of my 7th and 8th graders acted out the scenes, and laughter filled the air of the classroom.

Without your donation, my students would not have been had the opportunity to learn about ways to improve their relationships at home, in school, and in their future careers. Future classes will have this lesson for years to come.”

    With gratitude,

    Mrs. Wong

  • Journey Into Space

    Funded Aug 3, 2023

I am very thankful to you for your donation to help my students gain access to informaitonal materials inside my classroom in order to participate in a fun project about space! Because funding is non-existent for books at my school, you have enabled me to teach our kids the standards in a way that will be tangible and memorable for them.”

    With gratitude,

  • Future City Planning & Writing Project

    Funded Mar 3, 2022

I want to thank you for donating the materials we needed for our futuristic city planning project. Students used The Hunger Games novel to inspire them to create futuristic cities with a legend that matched their reading.

They analyzed the timeless themes of oppressive government and the right to be individualistic in a future society. The rulers, art pencils, and paint that you supplied helped us create a project for Open House that many parents were impressed by, but more importantly, the supplies helped my students with analytic and kinesthetic skills they will need to be successful in their future careers. Bless you all for your donations.”

    With gratitude,

    Mrs. Wong

  • Inspire Kids to Do More

    Funded Jan 23, 2022

I want to thank you for making an impact on my students' lives. Because they had access to the inspirational book, He Named Me Malala, they were able to see the impact of standing up for their own rights and the rights of others. Our project included a charity proposal, and students learned how to be persuasive (like Malala was) to convince others to donate to a worthy cause through producing Google Slides and a Literature Board. They also presented a speech to speak up for their charities.

The book empowered my students to know that they are stewards to others, as you all have been stewards to us, and thanks to you, I will be able to teach the concept of empowerment for years to come.”

    With gratitude,

    Mrs. Wong

  • Holocaust Detective Supplies

    Funded Nov 2, 2017

I want to thank you for contributing a school set of highlighters for our students at Standard Middle School. The highlighters were used to cite evidence from informational documents and letters pertaining to The Holocaust. When the students first saw the brightly colored packages, they were excited to be able to choose their own colors. They enthusiastically became detectives both in the classroom and at The Los Angeles Museum of The Holocaust.

During our project entitled "Holocaust Detectives," students identified the details of The Diary of Anne Frank, The Boy in The Striped Pajamas, and letters from survivors. This helped them to understand the significance of The Holocaust before they spoke to a survivor at the museum. Because of our research, students were able to identify artifacts such as the Jewish Star of David, the menorah, and The Torah.

The highlighters have helped to make the citation process fun and organized. Students were more easily able to manage their evidence to establish quotes that were most significant to their thesis papers. In addition, we have used the highlighters to investigate letters from The Civil War, and analyze literature from that era. We plan to continue to use the highlighters for our next project regarding the life of Frederick Douglass and the speeches of Sojourner Truth and other abolitionists and women's rights activists. We are truly thankful for your gift.

    Sincerely,

    Jana Wong

  • Informational Materials Project

    Funded Nov 19, 2015

The students at Standard Middle School and I are very thankful for our new informational materials delivered to us every month. We have used the Scholastic Upfront News magazines to analyze current events, to learn about how statistics are used, and to gather evidence for our debate sessions.

When the students first saw the beautiful photography and layouts in this subscription, they were very excited to read the articles. Some students, who are particularly difficult to motivate, have read the articles without any prompting at all. The teacher lessons that come with the subscription help to inspire me, and they give my students a chance to understand the global world around them. Your gift has made it easy to follow the Common Core standards, and it has inspired even my lowest readers to enjoy learning.

In the future, we will continue to use our Scholastic subscriptions to reinforce our next unit on robotic engineering. Many links in the online access portion of the subscription are wonderful tools for our students. Your generosity is helping over one-hundred students to understand science, reading comprehension, and so much more. Thank you again, for your generosity and insightful philanthropy.”

    With gratitude,

    Mrs. Wong

My students are very poor for the most part, but they are good kids who mostly come from hard working families. They love to learn, and their excitement is infectious. Most importantly, they depend on the teachers at my school to keep them informed. Because my school had to focus their resources on remodeling and rebuilding, they have put very little into resources for our kids. Online resources are greatly needed at this time.
