Debate On! Expanding Critical Thinkers...
Funded Mar 27, 2018Thank you so much for your generous donation. I was able to add three more debaters because we had more computers to check out. This would not have been possible before! Almost all of my students do not have access to a laptop so your contribution allows them to access information and be on the same playing field as their opponents. We are so honored that we can have this opportunity. Our students are able to prepare for their debates more effectively because of this donation. We are extremely excited.”

This classroom project was brought to life by Ripple.Debate On! How Public Speaking Transforms Student Lives
Funded Jun 30, 2017The technology received as made a huge difference in this class. In preparation for their first debate tournament, students have been asked to use a new computer-based system for storing their speeches and notes. This system is called verbatim. Now, instead of bringing hard copies of their speeches and notes, students can save multiple versions of their speeches, and can alter their arguments in live time. Additionally, my students will now have complete access to a variety of debate resources that will be used to prepare for the tournaments.
In addition to using verbatim, students are most excited about being able to take these computers home. While our school does have computers on campus, students are limited to checking them out during school hours, depending on availability. However, now, students can take home a computer and spend the week prepping for their debate from school, and from home. This is extremely exciting to my students because they will get a chance to become more familiar with the content using the actual device they will be using during tournament.
Due to the fact that debate is not only a class but is also a club, we have assigned student officers. Our president, vice president and communications liaison have already begun using these computers at school and at home. We also have assigned one of our students to be our technology reporter. Her job is to explore this new system of verbatim and report back to the class. So far, she has just gotten started. We hope to have the system up and running for every student by our first tournament in October. Words cannot express how truly excited our students are. Having access to these computers is making it possible to live up to the skills needed for the 21st century.”
