My students come into our school with reading levels far below grade level. As a result, most of our students struggle in ELA class and see reading as a chore or something they are forced to do by their teachers. This attitude breaks my heart, but I have hope that this coming school year will dramatically change the outlooks - and futures - of my kiddos. This year, our school is making a shift to develop a strong, positive culture of reading in our building. For the first time EVER, every classroom will have its own classroom library. By donating to this project, you are ensuring that every child in our school can find a book he or she would like to read. Students who are in 6th grade but who maybe read on only a 2nd grade level will, for possibly for the first time, be able to find an interesting book that is accessible to them. They will have time for independent reading in their intervention class, time to settle in and get truly lost in a book for the first time. By donating to this project, you are helping children who read below grade level close the achievement gap so that they can catch up to their peers. These students will no longer feel lost in class because they cannot read the grade-appropriate material. They will gain confidence in their abilities because their reading skills have grown. By donating to this project, you are helping an entire building of children become their best and brightest selves, simply by giving them books.
