Only a few of my students attended a learning program before kindergarten. They are trying to adjust to being away from mom. Its a challenge, trying to engage them when they keep asking when will I see my mom. Their reading and writing skills are nonexistent. Many of them have no one at home to help reinforce what is being taught in the classroom. My school is student centered, but academically our student growth is low. Therefore, I spend a lot of my own money to create a learning environment that is safe, interactive, and engaging. My classroom theme is Dr. Seuss. There are plenty of book for them to read. A colorful reading area was created for them to relax. Now I have to teach them to read. For kindergarten, you have to really be creative.
