Funded Oct 17, 2016We just celebrated the tenth meeting of our roleplaying games club this past Friday. My students are smitten with the game and the club. I feel it has been a resounding success for several reasons.
First, Dungeons & Dragons is a complicated game, but the students in the club have risen to the occasion. They have utilized their math skills to calculate chances, add numbers rapidly and make connections to algebra. They have begun to think strategically about their actions and accessed their memory of prior events for predicting future outcomes. This kind of deep thinking from students is the holy grail for elementary school teachers.
Another reason I believe the roleplaying club was a success was because the students have exhibited increased creativity inside and outside the club. The students have created backgrounds for their characters. They have also creatively thought about novel solutions to complex problems. The rewards for creativity have paid dividends in math, reading and writing.
Finally, the club has fostered strong relationships between its members. I have been able to connect with students. One of my students who lost his brother this year has created strong bonds with other group members. A new student to the school has also made strong new friendships where none existed before. My hope is that these bonds will last as the students move on to middle school.
Thank you for your tremendous support. I am humbled that you were willing to help us. My hope is to at least fit in 10 more sessions with these students and do it again next year as well. Thanks again.”
With gratitude,
Mr. Filson
Board Games for Education II: Gaming Boogaloo
Funded Jan 19, 2016Dear Generous Donors,
Your contributions have allowed me to purchase additional games with a particular focus on cooperative games like Pandemic and Forbidden Island. These games have allowed my students to struggle with working with one another, but ultimately realizing that teamwork matters. They take turns, they listen to all the ideas, and most importantly they have created bonds of friendship through gaming. Many of my students have moved on to middle school, but we have started a new club this year and I feel a new crop of students will continue to benefit from these games. Thank you so very much for your generous donation.”

Board Games for Education
Funded Sep 11, 2015I am writing to update you on my after school Board Games Club and how your contribution helped my students. I officially ran the club last fall for one day a week for six weeks. We had a total of twelve students who joined the club. Every student had an opportunity to play and learn every game that your contribution purchased. The club was popular enough to meet several more times beyond its initial six week run.
The club helped many students in different ways. Several of the students that were in the club were latchkey kids. Their participation in the club gave them constructive, organized and social time they would not otherwise have for an hour and half a week. One of my students who struggles with socialization due to autism engaged with his peers and was able to socialize through board gaming. Additionally, the students who were in the club and in my regular classes increased their relationship with me, which in turn improved their participation in class.
I am starting a new club this winter that will continue until the end of the school year. My plan is to create a new Donor's Choose project to increase the variety of games that we play in the Board Games Club, with a specific focus toward cooperative games. You have done more than enough by donating, but if you are interested, keep an eye out for my new Donor's Choose project. Thanks again!”
With gratitude,
Mr. Filson
