Students at our middle school are ethnically diverse. Over 70% of the students qualify for and receive free/reduced meals, which are often the only meals they eat on a daily basis. Many students are homeless and live on our local beaches and others live in crowded homes containing multiple families. Over 46% of the students are in single parent families, sometimes with only grandparents or other relatives in charge of their care. The 8th grade is a pivotal year for our students. This is when they are developing the social, emotional, and academic skills necessary to help them succeed in life, as well as become career and college ready. There are many national and state assessments given during this grade level, including the NAEP, the ACT EXPLORE and the state science assessment. Making sure that students learn the required content AND that they do so with engaging, rigorous learning experiences that challenge and excite them ensures that they are prepared for their future.
