Students are struggling to learn math. Many students need to take remedial math in college and these students just graduated high school. Further many students quit college because of the struggle in math. The problem is students do not understand why and how math works. Students mostly hate math. They just don't understand the connections. Society needs to move away from learning a method and performing a task over and over. My goal is to present open ended math problems where the students will work together to solve the problems. They will have productive struggles as they wade through the various options and learn more. They will learn more methods. They will hear the reasoning of others. They will see how all math works together. Normally this would be a simple task, they work in groups, face to face. We all know that is not possible anymore. The iPads are needed to give the students the ability to still work together but remain separate. They will use the iPad to communicate and work on math problems. They will be able to draw the problem, see the ideas of others, work together to really learn math. There will be no need to share a single iPad as the students will remain distant, holding up their device, explaining their math and hearing the thoughts of others. The students can still engage in quality academic discourse while remaining distance from each other. The discourse portion is vital. This will promote domain specific language which will be useful when the students enter the working world. Imagine, having an employee who can already work as a team, be able to communicate succinctly, follow established norms and be creative, intuitive.
