Our students come from some of the highest poverty level in our area. Sometimes the food that they are given for breakfast and lunch at school is the only food they will eat that day. 10% of our students take home backpacks of food for their family that is provided by our school. Yet, they come in day in and day out ready to learn. Our testing scores last year had some of the highest gains in our area (over an 80 point increase). Yet, as the Computer Lab facilitator and after school Technology tutor, I know how important exposure to new tech is for these students to compete with others their age. They see these cool and new ways to learn on TV, or in the stores, and they have yet to experience it themselves. My hope is that though they may fall into a disadvantaged category now, we can help them make the gains they need to pull themselves out of the poverty cycle that they have been subjected to so far in their lives.
