Show Me In Missouri!
Funded Dec 16, 2009Our new projector screen is super fabulous! Now all of my students, even the ones sitting in the back of the class can see what's written on the overhead. As you can see from the posted pictures, our old screen was a narrow window shade.
Our district is operating under a budget deficit and has no money allocated for purchases such as this screen that you have provided for us. In fact, every teacher in our district has recently had to take a furlough to eliminate layoffs and help out the school district. Your generous gift has truly made our classroom a dream classroom. My students get the best because of you!”

Cultural Connections to Historical Fiction
Funded Oct 29, 2009We received our books yesterday in the mail. My students were delighted! They immediately checked many of the books out from me and took them home to read. This morning I checked their progress and many students were on their third and fourth chapters. This may not seem like amazing progress to you, but imagine a child who reads 2 to 7 grade levels behind and who has never completed reading an entire chapter book. My students are working hard to catch up; when you do not hear English being spoken at home before you begin kindergarten, by the time you enter English-speaking school, you are already playing the 'catch up' game. It really take high-interest books to capture their imaginations.
Many of my students do not get to go to the public library because of transportation or safety issues, and they were thrilled to see the new books.
Our goal is to grow two years of reading in this one academic year so that the students can catch up to grade level. They are up to the challenge and are working really hard at raising their reading levels. Of course, the better they can read, they better they are able to perform in school... and in life!”

This classroom project was brought to life by St. Louis Funders and 4 other donors. On Point with a Pencil Sharpener
Funded Nov 3, 2009Thank you all for the fabulous new pencil sharpener! It is absolutely amazing! It has a strong motor that sharpens quickly and quietly.
I cannot even tell you how much of a distraction and issue that pencil sharpening in class can be. In the past, sometimes students would struggle with the pencil sharpener and it took way too long to sharpen a pencil. Now, my students can sharpen quickly so that it does not cause a distraction during instructional time. I even have a jar of pre-sharpened pencils available to students so that they can just exchange quickly, rather than make noise sharpening at an inopportune time.
The kids LOVE it! We are ever so grateful!”

Funded Jan 7, 2009Thank you so much for funding our headphones for our listening centers! Because of your donation, our classroom is slowly but surely coming together. I recently updated the reading levels of all the kids in our school, and I was shocked to see that about only 10 out of 100 students are reading on grade level. We have a dedicated, hard-working staff and wonderful administrative support. I really appreciate your donation to help out with the technology component toward literacy. Overcoming the effects of poverty really takes a community! Thank you”

Guns to Books!
Funded Oct 15, 2008Wow! Thank you for funding my project. It is a dream come true! I told my students today that our project had been funded and they were so happy. We can't wait to get our novels and books on cd. The students really like following along as the book is read aloud to them. They are working hard to get their reading rates up so they can understand more and read faster. Thank you so much!
