I work for a district that services a 98.9% Hispanic population with approximately 84% of students economically disadvantaged. I teach ELAR to 5th graders. Many students consistently struggle with the English language and lack intrinsic motivation to try their best. They are easily discouraged when they make common English errors. In addition, it is challenging to find material that has interesting topics for this age yet with a low readability level. For instance, if they check out English books at the 1st/2nd grade reading level, they are too "babyish" for them. After purchasing some vocabulary games last year, I found their enthusiasm rising! They challenged each other to games! I would hear them encourage their partners! The ultimate response was when they started using some of those vocabulary words in their writing! I hope to see that excitement for the English language soar with this new group of students I have this year!
