On a typical day I see upwards to 40 students - all of whom are English Languages Learners who have either been in the US for a number of years, or who have only been here a few weeks. They come from many countries (mostly South America). They all come in with varying levels of knowledge of English. Many come in with no English whatsoever. I have kids between Kindergarten and Third grade. Speaking and Listening are two areas I want improve in my students, so they will feel comfortable in their regular classrooms and with their peers. We are a Title I school, and a third of our population comes from Spanish Speaking families. Some go home and will only hear Spanish. Some also have limited exposure to everyday things, experiences, and vocabulary. This is an extra chance and place for them to work on their English language development. Many of my students go through a 'silent period', where they speak to very few others. Often they talk to me. I want to help them build their confidence.
