Each and every classroom is made up of students with diverse learners and learning needs. Not all students learn in exactly the same way. In fact, when educators teach using students' multiple intelligences, students' experiences are strengthened and nurtured. This project gives students the materials they need to learn, remember, perform, and understand in different ways. Donald Bear's Words Their Way Word Study Program allows students to learn and spell words at their own pace and on their own level. Students in my classroom will receive differentiated weekly word sorts based on the stages of spelling development. Word study helps students become problem solvers of words in reading and writing, and is an important component and foundation for reading. This project includes pocket charts, rubber mats for organizing, laminating sheets for protecting our words (so we can use our words over and over in games such as charades, memory, and Pictionary) Wiki Stix for hands-on manipulation of words, and stamps for visual representation and kinesthetic spelling. Students love building and playing with their words using different materials. This project provides engaging materials for organized, fun, hands on word work.
