Block play is recognized as a valuable tool in supporting the cognitive development of young learners. Block play can support children's emerging understandings of mathematical concepts, such as categorization, magnitude (bigger versus smaller), numbers, pattern & shape, spatial relations, and part-whole relationships. Given the benefits of block play I am requesting funds to purchase the following materials for use in my classroom: (a) Hardwood community vehicles set, (b) Lakeshore Community Garages, (c) Block play traffic signs, and (d) Block play home builder. I have several intended uses of these materials. First, the materials will be utilized by my students in the Block Play Center in my classroom, where they have opportunities to engage in (a) unstructured play and (b) teacher prompted activities involving constructive or dramatic play. Second, I will utilize these materials during the year when I provide direct small- and large-group instruction on the topics of Community Helpers and Transportation (both are units I cover), as well as mathematical concepts such as shape, size (absolute and relative), and number. Finally, I intend to use the blocks in the telling and re-telling of stories (which can be useful in fostering language and reading development).
