  • Cultivating Cultural Diversity through Reading

    Funded Dec 14, 2010

Thank you so much for your generous donations that allowed my Cultivating Cultural Diversity project to be filled and completed this school year.

My students were really taken with the novels we read. They were able to connect with so many of characters from the different books. Because of the high interest in the stories, the students participated in lengthy discussions and projects which connected their knowledge from text to self, text to text and text to world. They completed thorough graphic organizers, summaries, video segments, editorials, power points, and posters.

The students displayed a phenomenal growth in their tolerance of our school's diverse population. We put together a plan to begin a "Diversity Cub" next school year.

With the generous reusable novels, audio tape and Educational version video I received this year I will be able to continue working on improving students cultural awareness and tolerance for many school for years to come. ”

    With gratitude,

    Ms. Shoemaker

  • "Autobiographies In Action"

    Funded Feb 24, 2009

Thank you so very much for the generous donation to my, "Autobiographies in Action," student projects. The books that were donated are helping to prepare the students for various types of writing. The books demonstrate how to capture an audiences attention as well as creatively take your own thoughts, life experiences, and dreams to create wonderful anecdotes to last a lifetime.

The Crayola products are allowing the students to bring their artistic images to life. The drawings that the students are creating depict an idea from their writing to help the future readers visualize their ideas. The products donated will not only guide my classes through this very special project, but many more to come. I can not thank you enough for support. My students learned a valuable lesson about giving back to the community. This alone is a lesson that will last a lifetime.

    With gratitude,

    Ms. Shoemaker

My English Language Learners are in the 6th, 7th and 8th grades. They attend a wonderful public middle school. My particular students are level 1 and 2 readers. These students are a variety of cultures. Some of the students have been in the U.S.A their whole life just visiting their native lands, others have migrated back and forth between the two lands and some have recently immigrated to our country. Many of my students parents are non-english speaking or have limited abilities. The students do a lot of translating for their non-english speaking family members. These students are a real inspiration for their families and for their teachers to become more acculturated. I love learning first hand about the different languages and cultures of my students.
