  • Ensuring All Students' Needs Are Met with Dyslexia Intervention

    Funded Jul 2, 2019

I'm am touched and honored that you have donated to my project. I'm looking forward to the training in August because I know it will help me become a better teacher. There are so many students that have Dyslexia and I'm happy to finally be able to adequately meet their needs in the classroom. Thank you again for your donation and kind words of support!”

    With gratitude,

  • Promoting Literacy With Current Events

    Funded Oct 8, 2018

Thank you so much for your generosity! When I shared the news with our class, they were thrilled about the magazines! We had one set sent to us at the beginning of the year and the kids loved reading the articles. The first issue was about the volcanoes that erupted this summer in Hawaii. I had many students who then decided to read about and write reports on volcanoes. Our class is so excited to have this resource and cannot thank the donors enough!”

  • Headphones to Promote Literacy

    Funded Apr 12, 2018

These headphones have made our classroom more functional. Students who need to have text read to them are not forced to sit isolated in a corner, they can read around the classroom without distracting other kids. We have lots of students reading below grade level this year, but as a teacher, I'm able to easily modify work for those students. The new headphones are also more comfortable for students and consistently work for them. Now, I do not have to troubleshoot headphone problems with students, I can focus on working with students instead.

Also, students have taken pride in becoming "experts" at rolling up their headphone cords before storing them. The students take responsibility of the headphones and ensure that everything is neatly stored in our classroom.

We appreciate our donor's generosity. We use the technology daily! The headphones have impacted our classroom in a great way!”

    With gratitude,

  • Promoting Literacy With Current Events

    Funded Oct 26, 2017

Thank you so much for choosing to fund our project! My students have been LOVING reading Scholastic Student News. They feel empowered that they now have the ability to talk to their parents about current events. I've also noticed my students are discussing what they read with each other. There was a recent issue about veterans and the article sparked a full class discussion about military families and what they go through. Some kids have taken it even further, an issue on polar bears sparked a group research project!

While all my students have been enjoying the online component of Student News, my ESL (English as a Second Language) students have also benefited the most. The website reads the articles to them, while highlighting the words at the same time. This gives them the ability to work on comprehension skills with a grade appropriate text. They're also becoming more fluent readers, as the read (sometimes multiple times) the articles. I've seen an improvement in their reading levels, scores and their general confidence.

It's amazing that something as simple as a weekly newspaper has such a huge impact on my students. We are extremely thankful for your generosity!”

    With gratitude,

    Ms. Grosso

Scholastic News is a great resource for students. We've used it in years past, but due to budget cuts, we are not able to pay for it this year. Scholastic News provides students a chance to practice reading skills while learning about the world around them. Students look forward to each new issue because they enjoy reading about current events. It's an added bonus that the articles created for third graders and students are able to read and understand the articles. We watch a daily student news program and Scholastic News provides us with a supplemental resource to build on topics they have already been exposed to. The subscription also comes with a digital component for my English Language Learners to read along with on a computer or iPad.
