My school is an elementary school located in an inner-city. We currently serve over 650 energetic students in grades Pre-K-5th. Over 98% of our students receive free lunch. Our school is located in a high poverty area with over 80.5% of the residents living below the poverty line and receiving state services. Students view our school as a safe haven and many stay after school to participate in the various extracurricular activities. Due to the high transition of families moving, many of them don't own any books of their own. Many of their families have been disenfranchised from school for multiple generations. Traditional literacy tends to be undervalued and reading programs are ignored.
