  • Diverse Books for Prek!

    Funded Nov 3, 2020

Thank you so much for providing my room with diverse books! Because of your generous donation my children can now read books about people who look like them

and feel like them. This is a precious thing, especially in a PreK room where we are beginning our journey to learn about all the things that make us special and unique.

In our classroom reading is woven throughout our day. We begin and end each day with a read aloud and stories are told and shared at various points throughout our time together in class. It is these stories that help us learn about our past and the potential of our futures, and that is why it is paramount that we include books that show all the wonderful ways that people can be in the world. Because of your donation, my students can see how wonderful they are, just as they are.

My students have been especially loving these new books at read aloud! Two of my students in particular are loving Sulwe and The Day you Begin. These are becoming fast favorites and they request them over and over again. Without you, this would not have been possible, so from the bottom of my heart I thank you so so much.”

    With gratitude,

    Ms. Meg

In our classroom, we are focusing on how can come together and share our experiences in meaningful ways to connect us to one another. In the PreK room, books are essential to this process. In this through our stories that we learn about people who share in our experiences and cultures. However, without books that show a greater diversity of people, my children cannot make deeper connections if they cannot see themselves in the pages. If we are going to be a truly anti-racist, inclusive school community, then our books need to express that to give our students the connections they need to thrive.
