  • Experiential Learning: Producing Produce From Seed to Harvest

    Funded Nov 19, 2024

We are excited to share our progress with you since our project has been funded!

At Edison High School, we are an entry point school for many immigrant families and students. Many of our classrooms have students who were born from all over the world; each student speaks multiple languages, while representing their home language, also. Our classrooms are incredibly diverse spaces. Along with that diversity, comes some home-sickness. Many students were uprooted from their homes, leaving behind a life full of love and hope.

This project is helping bring back some of that hope by giving our students the equipment to begin growing fruits and vegetables from their home countries. As a physics classroom, we are working on tying together the concepts of Biology and Physics in an energy production unit that focuses around the natural biological processes for energy production.

With the raised bed grow boxes, grow tent system, and grow lights, we are able to propagate, and grow the fruits and vegetables students miss the most. One of the best things about the raised bed grow boxes is that they are also SIP boxes (Sub-Irrigated Planter). This is incredibly beneficial to us and our adventures in growing, because we can put 2.5 gallons of water in the bottom of the planter, and the plants drink it as they need it. This helps out when we have long weekends and nobody is around to water the plants for a few days. It is MOST helpful during out extended breaks. For example, during winter break, nobody will need to come in to water, because the planter box will take care of that for us!

The best part of the grow tent system is that we can always have optimal growing conditions even when they are not optimal in the classroom. For example, we tried planting seeds, but the humidity in the classroom is around 25-30% which is way too low for seedlings. With the grow tent and humidifier, we are able to maintain 75-80% humidity in the grow tent.

Thank you for your generous donation. This equipment will benefit students not just this year, but for many years to come providing us with amazing fruits and vegetables to eat while learning.”

    With gratitude,

    Mr. Ryan

With the Urban Worm Bag, we are able to propagate, and grow the fruits and vegetables students miss the most. The worm bag provides us with a couple things within the classroom. It provides us a place to compost biological waste, paper towels, and any fruits or vegetables students have left over from their lunch. The worms then compost and digest the food waste leaving nutrient-rich "worm castings." AKA, worm waste which the plants absolutely love!!!

The students have been having a lot of fun feeding the worms, and then also holding the worms. Most of the time we leave the worms alone and allow them to do their things, however, sometimes our curiosity gets the best of us and we go searching for the worms, similar to in the picture.

Thank you for your generous donation. This equipment will benefit students not just this year, but for many years to come providing us with amazing fruits and vegetables to eat while learning.”

With the AC Infinity Propagation Domes and Fabric Pots, we are able to propagate, and grow, the fruits and vegetables students miss the most. The Grow Domes provides us with the perfectly controlled growing environment where our seeds, seedlings, and cuttings can thrive; it gives them the best opportunity to be successful as possible.

Upon seeing the Grow Domes set up in the classroom, you could feel the excitement of the students grow! Each day the students come in to class, they like to open the domes to check on the progress of their seeds. We began by growing strawberries and mini-tomatoes. Now that we have spent some time growing, the students are reaping the fruit of their labor. During class, students are able to walk up to the plants growing under the light and eat a tomato or strawberry. We have plans for growing so many more varieties of produce!

  • Making Physics Fun!!!

    Funded Aug 21, 2014

I can't thank you enough for believing in education and taking an immediate action to help out my students. There is no way I would have these resources and tools if it weren't for organizations and people like you who believe that teachers can make a differences in a students' lives.

As the beginning of the school year got closer and closer, I began to panic and worry that I wouldn't have any whiteboards for my classroom. I began to get disheartened. Just when I had began to plan different ways to perform classroom instruction for the year, I received an email stating my DonorsChoose project was fully funded.

    I sat in disbelief.

    I cried.

The generosity in giving to causes, like education and schools with high poverty, was overwhelming. Thank you for your heart.”

    With gratitude,

    Mr. Ryan

My students are in 11th and 12th grade and are eager to learn. They come from a rough area in a large urban environment but that all fades away as they enter the classroom. Education gives them an opportunity to get out of their harsh environment. The whiteboards help incredibly to their educational process.
