I serve a population of students from various backgrounds and socioeconomic levels. Although these students may not share the same personal struggles or triumphs, they all share a love of music. They are curious about cultures from around the globe and the music that defines them. In our 6th grade World Drumming Class we study the music and culture of Africa. Our 7th grade class studies the Caribbean culture. Last year we implemented an Inclusive Music Class that reaches exceptional students at our school. Our 8th grade music students serve as Peer Helpers. The peer helpers provide friendship and support to students with special needs. Currently, we use a class set of tubanos and other auxiliary percussion instruments in our exploration of World Music. Students of all levels perform rhythmic patterns from the specific culture being explored. They also have the opportunity to improvise and create their own compositions within specific guidelines.
