I am a special education teacher. My 4th and 5th grade students have learning disabilities. They are hands-on, visual learners. Math can be difficult for them without seeing and touching what they are learning. Some don't like math because they haven't done well in the past and haven't acquired the basics. Some are still working at a first grade level. Most of my students are also learning English as a second language and they struggle to retain the vocabulary of math. We need math manipulatives in our class to increase learning. We need center activities and games to make learning math fun and increase students' interest and self-confidence.
