    Funded Jan 30, 2024

I am amazed at all the awesome things these students have been able to accomplish with the resources and materials that we were able to aquire with your wonderful assistance! The best part is that we arent finished yet and there is still more learning that we have in front of us as we prepare for our summer sessions. Our STEM Pathways Academy has gotten to build solar eclipse viewers anticipation of the upcoming total eclipse. The built their very own microscope and spectrometers. So in addition to get to learn about how to use these technologies, they learn about how they work as they have built them. We still have solor cars to build, self built rockets to launch, and weather patterns to study! Thank you!

  • The Economics Behind Policy...Making the Government Connection

    Funded Oct 7, 2020

Thank you so much for the assistance you provided for my students. With your help, my students are able to participate in the SMG Stock Market Simulation. This provides them with a real time and real world scenario to practice skills that fit within the business themed academy that I teach in.

I am teaching an AP Government class, so for my students to be engaged in the stock market simulation while we are watching a presidential election and new administration pass executive orders or new legislation is very enriching for them.

From a current event standpoint, I absolutely love that this simulation has driven them to following current events and watching how the markets, the consumers, and our government are all connected to one another. In the last week, as the markets have experienced the push from retail investors towards stocks such as GameStop and AMC, my students were following closely and trying to make money along with those in the Reddit crowd.”

  • Walking in their Footsteps: Civil Rights Museum @ Lorraine Motel

    Funded Dec 6, 2019

Thank you so much for your support. Thanks to your kind support, we were able to take a groups of students who had never been before to the Civil Rights museum in Memphis. This made an impact on student learning by extending on what we were already doing in their history classes.

The higlight of this trip was listening to the students share out about how they felt or what exhibits left the strongest impact on them.

Since we were only able to bring 40 students on the trip, we allowed those who attended to share their impact stories with each of their respective classes.”

  • The Economics Behind Policy...Making the Government Connection

    Funded Oct 4, 2019

I am happy to let you know that my students are loving the educational opportunity that has been afforded to them as a result of their participation in the Stock Market Game simulation. You generous donation has allowed me an opportunity to bring new curriculum into the lives of my Government students, which has enabled them to make connections between our government actions and the impact those actions have on our economy. I am hopeful that students in my class will be able to take what they know to make more sound financial decisions in their futures and to gain a need for a more comprehensive understanding of our our government and economics systems run.”

  • The Economics Behind Policy...Making the Government Connection

    Funded Sep 5, 2018

I want to start by saying thank you. Your support has allowed for my Government students to watch in real time how the decisions made by our government, or something as simple as a Tweet from the President, can impact our financial markets. The students have been super competitive with one another, and they like to compare their portfolio with my own. I have students who are 16 and 17 stopping by to tell me about purchases they have made and better yet, telling me why that stock is going to do well. Although this is a government class, we have learned how various businesses that are publicly traded can be purchased and looked for ties that company has to the government. We built one lesson around the impact of the SEC fines on Tesla and Elon Musk. In their government curriculum, they are required to know how independent regulatory commissions work, so illustrating this interaction between Tesla and the SEC was a perfect way to show the impact our government can have on the market.

In closing, it really is, only through your support that this learning opportunity has been provided. So again, I greatly appreciate what you've provided for my students.”

  • Financial Repercussions of Government Decisions

    Funded Aug 30, 2017

I have been teaching for 8 years, and in that time, I have discovered that the most effective strategy is a real world application of the content I am teaching. With the help of your donations, I have been able to provide my students with the opportunity to enrich their AP Government knowledge and to allow a way for the students to connect how the decisions our government makes impacts our financial markets. Students are currently on their Thanksgiving Break, but voluntarily watching their stock portfolios and sending me emails to ask questions about what is going on. Despite being on break they are working hard because of their own interest in what we are doing in class. So, thank you so much for your help and for your kind donations.”

  • Psychology of the Markets

    Funded Sep 15, 2016

First and foremost, I want to say thank you so much for your kind donation. Thanks to your help and other donors such as yourself, we were able to pay for entrance fees so that my students could participate in the SIFMA Stock Market Simulation. This class is actually a Psychology class, but we have been practicing how use the psychological concept of behavioral analysis to apply that in a real world way. Since I teach in a Business Academy, our classes are geared towards a that business theme, and my students perform Behavioral Finance. They use their MacAir computer with others in their group to make changes to their stock portfolio, based on analysis that they have performed on given companies. The students have to break down important features of a company that might give indications on the direction a stock may go in the future (such as Beta Number, past years performance during shopping seasons, etc...). Students also incorporate math skills to account for how much total cost they will see deducted from their account, to include commission fees. Part of the analysis process also requires that students check various online news affiliates to see how the events that occur in our country and in the world affect the markets and how they impact individual companies.

You have truly provided my students with an opportunity to learn skills that will be useful after graduation, so again, thank you so much!”

  • Practicing Life: Stock Market Simulation

    Funded Aug 22, 2015

I want to first and foremost say thank you again so much for the support that you have provided to my students. The resource that had been requested was team fees so that my AP Economics students could participate in the SIFMA Corporation Stock Market Game simulation. We have no completed the first round of this contest, and my students will compete again in the Spring competition. This simulation provides a wonderful opportunity to see a real world application to many of the concepts we have learned through our economics curriculum. Since the curriculum this Fall semester focused primarily on Micro Economic concepts, my students used their knowledge of supply and demand, and various market structures to help in making decisions about which stocks to purchase. We will focus on Macro oriented topics in the Spring and we will use the simulation to analyze the impact our Government and world events have on our markets. The students have been very excited about the simulation in general, as it has spurred more competition, but they have enjoyed most of all, the opportunity to actually practice real world scenarios.

We are all looking forward to taking the experience gained this Fall to become even better investors in the Spring. Thank you again so much for the opportunity that you have provided to my students.”

  • Investing in Their Future: Application of Knowledge

    Funded Sep 11, 2014

I want to first and foremost say thank you so much for your support to economic education and specifically for supporting my students. My students in both my Economics and Government classes have so much fun in playing and competing against one another in the Stock Market Game that SIFMA coordinates that they forget that they are actually learning real world applicable information. Both classes maintain portfolios in teams of 3-4 students each. The Economics class focus on primarily the financial aspect of their portfolio as we work a lot to focus on cost of stocks, change in price over time, total cost with commission fees, etc... The Government class focuses on what role government decisions play on the market's ups and downs. We try to look at regulation by the SEC and other business regulations to see how they impact the value of a company. The students all have access to computers and iPads in my room, so having access to this simulation allows the students to use the technology in a fun way, while still practicing the concepts I've taught them in lectures and discussion and also learning very valuable real world applicable skills. The individual teams play against each other but I also allow the two classes to compete against one another. The class that finishes the 10 week game with the best average gets what has become known as a "Non-Academic Day" to sit back and rest before semester tests and I will buy them pizza to eat. The Government class has actually won this prize for 3 consecutive semesters. Everyone always looks so forward to participating so that you so much for all of your support and for allowing my students such a wonderful opportunity.”

    With gratitude,

    Mr. Newman

I teach high school at a business themed career academy and my students are taking an application based government course. While it is very important for the students to all understand the basic functions of the government, it is even more important that they understand how government decisions impact their individual lives every day. With the help of these donations, my students will be able learn how government actions impact our daily financial markets. This stock market simulation will enable student teams to work together and purchase stocks in real time. They will bring together knowledge of current events, government regulations, and financial literacy, in order to make sound economic decisions on their stock portfolios.
