LEGO Exploration
Funded Sep 29, 2022Firstly, I would like to say thank you very much for your donations! When the boxes of Legos came in and were opened the children screamed with happiness at the sight of all the different colors, sizes, and shapes of legos in front of them. They could not wait to play and build!
My first graders have been enjoying the Legos to create and build structures. They gather, boys and girls working together in planning different kind of structure to build. Whether it's a house, space station, school, or water park they want to share it with their peers and teachers. In addition, they have been creating stories and acting out the stories using the Lego people. It's been wonderful to see the interactions between the children when they play. Play is so important in the lower grades to develop language, social-emotional development, and social skills.
A next step for my classes is to encourage the children to write stories about their Lego creations. They have fantastic imaginations that grow every time they pick up a Lego piece!”
With gratitude,

Funded Dec 22, 2021My first grade students were excited to see all the craft materials that we received. They could not wait to get started with launching our realistic fiction writing unit by creating realistic fiction characters using the different shades of skin tone stencils that we received. After creating them, they enjoyed using their characters to imagine places they can visit and creating problems, solutions, and dialogues when they acted it out. Writing has never been so incredibly fun for my students!
In addition, I wanted to share how much my first graders have enjoyed painting. Most of the students were learning remotely last year therefore this is the first year they have used paint and paint brushes. What creativity and enjoyment!
Thank you once again for all the arts and crafts materials we received. We will be forever grateful!”

Creative and Critical Thinking
Funded Sep 17, 2021Two boxes of fantastic activities for individual, partner, and group work were delivered on a Friday morning. I had decided to open the delivery with my students. Shouts of delight and excitement filled my classroom that afternoon. They unboxed new materials to play, create, critically think and use their imaginations! It was positively a great way to end the week!!
The magnetic tiles were great fun! The children planned, just as architects would in drawing a creative structure with a partner. They had to communicate their vision, compromise and negotiate the what, where, and how.
The phonics activities were enjoyable because of the sensory support. It reinforced and allowed for multiple practice of their vocabulary and phonics skills.
The STEM activity was a big hit with all! Some used the plans that were provided and others built their own chain reactions. They were creative and used critical thinking to test what worked and didn't work to create a chain reaction.
Thank you once again for your donations so my first grade students can grow in imagination, creativity, and critical thinking!!”
With gratitude,
Ms. Chen
