Bridging the COVID Gap
Funded Jan 22, 2022I want to tell you that I truly appreciate the funds that were donated to purchase headphones for my students. We use our Chromebooks everyday in 3rd grade. Some students do not have access to a quality set of headphones. Because of you, these students don't need to worry about purchasing headphones and they can get their online work done at school. Often students who use their own headphones will find that theirs break during the school year. Now I have plenty of extra sets that they can use.
At the end of the school year we have RISE testing. I had several of my students use the new headphones during RISE testing because they were better quality than what they had and the students knew it was important to be able to hear the speaker on the test.
I have also appreciated the vocabulary cards that were purchased. I have several students who are behind in reading and I use these resources during small group reading time to make my lessons more engaging.”

This classroom project was brought to life by Utah State Board of Education.Mentoring Literature
Funded Oct 11, 2019Mentor texts are a vital part of how I teach both grammar and writing. The mentor books that you helped fund for my classroom have made a huge impact on my ability to use them to teach my students.
To start a unit, I read the book to them and then point out a selected sentence that we will study throughout the week. We notice all the good things in the sentence, like, descriptive words, figurative language, proper punctuation, etc. We label all the parts of grammar in the sentence. We spend a day focusing on a particular part of grammar or language found in the sentence and do an activity based on that. Last, we write an imitation sentence together that allows them to practice our focus, or students write one on their own. All these activities guide my students to be better writers and to use correct grammar.
My students love the mentor books I share with them each week. It is so helpful to them to study the works of the various authors so they can see, hear and study creative and correct writing.”

We Need White Boards!
Funded Oct 4, 2014The white boards that you funded for my classroom have been such a wonderful addition to my daily routine in teaching my 1st graders. We use them to practice our spelling words, to practice writing sentences, to play learning games, math concepts and even just for fun.
My students were so impressed by the beautiful new boards when I opened the package. We talked about how we are going to take care of them to keep them nice for years to come. They love the lines on one side so they can write using a guide and they love to draw on the plain white side. It is something they ask me to do quite often even though we don' t have much time for drawing.
I love the white boards because it gives my students a different medium to write on besides pencil and paper. I always try to use the white boards instead of handing out worksheets. This saves paper and saves me time going to the workroom to make copies.
You have truly made my classroom a greater place for learning!”
With gratitude,
Mrs. Young
