The students I work with are asked to do a lot every day they’re at school. Add things like Autism, ADHD, PTSD, and other learning disabilities on top of those expectations, and it’s no wonder difficult behaviors appear from time to time. They need a safe space to go to where they can take a break to reset so they can rejoin their peers. My goal is to create a “Calm Down Corner” in our classroom where they can do just that. As adults, we’re encouraged to take breaks and indulge in a bit self care when we’re stressed, so why should we expect children to manage their stress without some support? Our Calm Down Corner will be filled with items that engage the five senses and aid the students in grounding techniques to calm their anxiety, anger, frustration, and fear. It will be a place to take a break, yes, but most importantly, it will be a place to learn invaluable skills that will help these students become better equipped to handle their emotions in positive ways.
