  • Electricity and Magnetism for All

    Funded Sep 20, 2015

The students and I were able to complete a whole electric circuit investigation and magnet experiment in the past month. We were using the magnets just last week to understand the relationship between force and distance using paperclips.

Many of the students were surprised to discover that adding more magnets increases the force but not in the linear way that they were expecting.

When the boxes with our supplies first arrived the students were very excited. As soon as we opened the box and saw the kits they began asking when we could use the science materials. Even though we have finished our electrical circuit unit the children are still asking if they can use the kit after school and during lunch time.

Now that we have finished our electrical circuit unit we are focusing more on magnetism. We are also going to use the magnets for a health related experiment about iron. This week the students will use the magnets to draw iron out of cereal! It is sure to be a messy but fun experiment.

You have provided my classroom with a love and spark for science!”

    With gratitude,

    Mrs. Akinsanya

  • Becoming Literate One Book at a Time

    Funded Sep 15, 2014

Thank you for your generous donations that helped put books in my students' hands. The students have been reading everyday using the books you provided. The books help the students read at their own independent level so that each child has a chance to advance his/her reading skills.

The day the books arrived the students were extremely excited. The students helped organize the entire classroom library, label books with the correct reading levels, and put them neatly on our shelves. The students have taken great care of the books and every child in my classroom has had the opportunity to read one of the books you helped provide.

Just recently I assessed the students' reading levels and I am pleased to say that every single student in my class moved up at least one reading level during the last quarter. Without your books this movement and growth would not have been possible. Your gift truly led to learning and ignited a desire for reading in all of my students. I still have students asking when we can get more books! Students who were not interested in reading before are now very excited for reading time because the books in our room represent their interests.

Thank you for investing in my students, the lifelong love of reading is present in my classroom because of your donation!”

    With gratitude,

    Mrs. Akinsanya

My students come from the Watts neighborhood of Los Angeles. Most of my students live in public housing. Most people would view my students as less likely to make it to college and victims of poverty. I like to view my students as the smart scholars that they are. They have unlimited and sometimes untapped potential but they are all very bright and eager to learn. We do not have many resources but what we do have we use wisely. We treat each other with respect in our classroom. The students are high energy and come in each morning ready to learn. Though our school is in the center of a very impoverished neighborhood it is full of laughter, joy, and caring teachers. There is never a dull moment. My students take pride in their school and being in my classroom and will tell you every chance that they get that they are going to college.
