Now that iPod touch comes equipped with video, internet, games, and really cool apps, why not give 79 hard-working students a chance to get better at math while using technology? I'd love to give my students the opportunity to share the same experience. I teach sixth grade mathematics at a public charter school in Manhattan. The school is a public 5-8 charter school, and we are in our 5th year of existence. Last year, 99% of my 70 students achieved at or above grade level on the New York State mathematics test, with half of them achieving advanced proficiency (the highest level-a 4). Nearly all of my current 79 students are African-American and from the Dominican Republic, where Spanish is their native language, and this composition is the same throughout the school.
