  • AP English Books Needed!

    Funded Jul 28, 2009

Thank you so much for your generous gift of books for my AP English Literature and Composition class. I cannot express how much this gift means to me, my students, and my school as a whole. This is the first year that we are able to offer any AP English class, a class that really and truly teaches students the skills they need, not just to pass the test, but to succeed at any college and at whatever subject they put their minds to. It is only the sixth year of our school and we had become aware that our students were not getting into the highest level of colleges due to the lack of available AP classes. Although we were confident that AP English was a class we wanted to offer, we simply did not have the funds to make it a reality. The books that you helped pay for have made this dream into a reality. For the first time at this school students are now enrolled in AP English and do not need to worry about how they will find and pay for their books on their own.

Although we have only been in school for a month I am already able to see my students making major strides towards becoming higher level readers and writers. In our first few weeks of classes my students have already begun to grow by leaps and bounds. Though the material pushes them harder than they have been pushed previously in their high school careers, they are working with it and beginning to understand some of the major differences between the writing traditionally done in high school, and that expected in college. I know that through this course this group of students will have the ability to mature as writers and readers while they prepare for college. These books have made that all possible. Thank you for donating!”

    With gratitude,

    Ms. R.

  • Technology for Struggling Readers

    Funded Dec 2, 2008

Thank you so much for funding my proposal! I cannot tell you how much it means to me and my students to have an extra computer to run our program on. This computer will allow us to reach out to an extra three students per section and help them get the literacy skills that they need which will help not only in my classroom but throughout the school as a whole. Literacy issues plague students for their entire lives and you are helping several young people avoid these problems before they get worse. Thank you again for your generous help, it is much appreciated”

    With gratitude,

    Ms. R.

  • Comfort for Struggling Readers

    Funded Oct 14, 2008

Thank you so much for helping fund "Comfort for Struggling Readers!" My students are very excited to have a comfortable and inviting place to read. Teaching 14-17 year-olds to read is an uphill battle, but I truly believe that these beanbag chairs will help my students feel comfortable as they begin to face what has been, for most of them, a huge struggle. I cannot wait to set up my new independent reading area and get started! This is really going to make a huge difference in my classroom.

    Victori”

    With gratitude,

    Ms. R.

Literacy is fundamental. At my high-need urban school there are already many obstacles for the students to overcome, and reading issues are one of the hardest problems to tackle. I am currently teaching a class of 9th through 12th graders who are struggling greatly with literacy. They are reading far below grade level and are therefore falling behind in most, if not all, of their classes.
