The addition of these materials to my classroom will give my students hands-on learning experiences and opportunities to practice their social skills. Research shows that play is vital to healthy brain development. In this vein, I look forward to using these classroom materials to set up a housekeeping area. Having a house cleaning set and stand, baby dolls to dress and care for will give my students a place to interact and decipher different ways to problem solve and work through conflict. At the beginning of each year, we focus on and model socially appropriate behavior in play. The cleaning set provides a venue through which this discussion and teaching can take place. As the students learn to work through social situations involving conflict they gain confidence in their ability to reason and become a valued member of the learning community. The learning centers I have selected will reinforce the concepts introduced in the classroom in a fun and meaningful way for my students. The alphabet learning locks, magnetic designers and nuts about learning centers will help strengthen not only academic skills but motor skills as well. Participating in small group activities with these centers, my students will strengthen the fine motor skills needed as we encourage them to begin writing and applying phonics skills. Through play, children learn to engage and interact with the world around them. They develop their imagination and grow as creative thinkers. As children play they acquire skills such as negotiating, resolving conflicts, determining cause and effect, and resiliency.
