Since my students have been through so much trauma in our county the past few years, it would be incredible to continue teaching them with vibrant literature on a weekly basis, providing my students with predictability and entertainment.
By using quality picture books I have been creating weekly units focused on vocabulary, grammar, writing, and so much more.
By choosing a beautiful storybook each week our second-grade team convenes and plans weekly activities to help to teach across the curriculum. The stories inspire creativity and motivate our planning! From in-depth conversations to vocabulary lessons, to art projects, the books have encouraged me to teach through this pandemic no matter where my students and I may be that week.
A great example of the weekly reading is from this past week when our grade level was able to read Duck for President to focus on the importance of voting. After reading the book, my class compared and contrasted the characters in the book after voting for who should be president, the Duck or Farmer Brown. At the end of the week we played a quick game on Kahoot, and the culminating activity was a Zoom with our principal who combined the votes from eight classes and then created a news broadcast announcing the winner. Needless to say, the students were thoroughly delighted!
In order to continue this style of teaching through high-quality literature, I am in need of some more books in order to teach one per week this school year, especially since the students' future of being at school or on-line is uncertain.
