Better Than Biography: Important Historical Figures
Funded Oct 21, 2021Thank you so much for your great generosity! Making reading interesting is definitely something that has become more challenging in the tech-savvy world in which we are living. Many students claim that they do not enjoy reading and do no read for hobby or pleasure.
Over the years, I have noticed that most students, by 4th grade, like to read certain stories or certain genres; however, there are rarely students who choose or want to read biographies. So, our 4th grade team wanted to do something to change the mindset around reading biographies. By finding fun, and engaging biographies for students to read, we were able to have students branch out and expand their reading to include this genre. By utilizing the Who Was book series, we were able to provide students with the opportunity to learn about famous characters from history.
The students had such a fabulous time reading and learning about their biography characters and did a wonderful job of creating and presenting projects based on their readings. Without your contribution, this would not be possible; so thank you so much for helping to encourage reading with our students!”
With gratitude,

Funded Sep 28, 2018I have been teaching for 12 years, so I've had several groups come and go during my tenure as a teacher; and it seems each year that I find fewer students who enjoy reading. As a reading teacher, I find it to be extremely disheartening the number of students who like and want to read. And that's where Storyworks come in!! Since introducing Storyworks to my students they can't wait to read and are begging me for more reading time. In fact, most of the time I have to tell them not to read ahead and look at the next story. The magazines that you purchased for my classroom has truly reinvigorated a love and a passion for reading; not only with my students, but with me as a reading teacher, as well. My favorite activity that we have completed so far has been a "Fortnite Debate". The students read an article about a girl who was asking her parents to be allowed to play Fortnite and her parents' response. The students were separated into 2 groups... For Fortnite and Against Fortnite... and they had to come up with evidence to support their claim using information from the passage, along with their background knowledge. I have never seen students so excited to be reading!!
Thank you so much again for your generosity! To see a child beg to keep reading brings a smile to my face and joy in my heart and that is due to your donation!”
With gratitude,
Mrs. Watkins
