With the new Utah Seed standards for science, my class is in need of science materials to perform experiments. In 5th grade we get to study chemical changes in properties and changes in matter. We also study the cycling of matter in ecosystems. Students learn through observation and through models and experiments. They make conclusions based off of the experiments they perform. They learn vocabulary this way too. I need chemicals and materials to be able to do this. The Seed Science standard Strand 5.2: PROPERTIES AND CHANGES OF MATTER states student will know the substances are made of matter and that matter can be changed. I need calcium chloride and potassium nitrate to show a change of energy. I need anionic polyacrylamide to show a physical change. I want to do an experiment with lead nitrate and potassium iodide. These two chemicals together make a bright yellow precipitate. This is a great way to show an unexpected color change in a chemical change. I also want to make bread with the students. I will need flour, powdered milk, and yeast for this. The students will see chemical changes in this process. We will make a DIY bouncy ball kit and a crystal growing kit to watch a chemical change. For perform these science experiments I need beakers, graduated cylinders, digital scales, craft sticks for stirring, and freezer bags. For the cycling of matter in ecosystems I want to purchase owl pellets for the students to dissect. This will lead to observations about what was eaten and the cycle of matter that happens with owls and what they consume. For the STEM part of the Seed Standards I will use the DC motors STEM kits for small groups.
