My family and friends have blessed my students and me with a wide variety of basic art materials. We are so fortunate to have access to basic colored pencils and markers already. However, my students are anxiously awaiting an opportunity to make more artwork with a broad selection of high-quality materials. If this project is fully funded, my students will have technical workshops, called Magic Maker Mondays, to bring skill-based art instruction into the English/Language Arts classroom. The materials provided through this project would allow us to participate in workshops on embroidery/beading, stencil making, charcoal drawing, and abstract sculpture. My students will study fashion design, graphic design, or architecture in their 10th-12th-grade years, so my goal is to provide them with a small taste of these pathways while they are still in 9th grade. After each workshop, students will have the opportunity to use their new skills (and materials) to make artwork in response to the texts we are reading in class. These artworks could serve as portfolio pieces that would aid students in gaining acceptance to art and design colleges.
