I have third-grade students; and their reading interests are becoming discovered at this age. They choose genres in which they are interested; and as a teacher, I try to have a variety of topics and titles from which they can choose. Whenever we read about current events, there is always student engagement and wonderful classroom discussion. Many students in my classroom have never left our state. This opens their eyes to world news. The nonfiction reading genre can be difficult for some students; however, when there are eye-catching, real world pictures, it will lead students to want to read!
