  • Learning in Color

    Funded Oct 12, 2024

Words cannot express my gratitude for your heartfelt donations to our students at East Side. In an ideal world, children's learning lives would be filled with color and all the materials you have now provided.

I am looking forward to sending you pictures of the enjoyment and engagement this gift brings to every young person in my classroom.”

    With gratitude,

    Ms. Erica Fontana

  • Bring the Joy Back to Class!

    Funded Sep 29, 2022

Our sixth-graders are using the puzzles and games weekly during our advisory class to build relationships and make new friends through shared interests! Students are also practicing speaking kindly to each other and taking turns, which are skills they can bring to group work in all classes and use for their whole lives.

Students were so excited to use these materials! They love having creative time with their peers and teachers. In fact, all of the sixth-grade classrooms are utilizing these materials and learning the same skills, and simply having fun! Just the other day, we combined two of our advisories in one room and watched twenty-five extremely happy students play board games, card games, and puzzles and begin relationships with students they hadn't yet had classes with this year.

Thank you so much for contributing to this wonderful cause. What an amazing chance for kids to be kids and learn some important life and social skills in the process! After the last two and half years of keeping their distance and being fearful, it is inspiring to see students enjoy socializing and collaborating again.”

    With gratitude,

    Ms. Erica Fontana

Our school is diverse in every way. It is a culture that values literacy first and foremost. We are a model school for many in NYC. We foster an environment of respect, social-emotional and academic growth and on-going support for families and students. Students are hungry for great books and interesting writing projects. They have diverse learning needs that in our ICT (integrated co-teaching) classroom we try to support and empower them with tools for success in reading and writing. We focus on students' strengths, and in one-on-one conferences and small group instruction, we use these strengths to help teach other students or push them to try new and different approaches to reading and writing. Our 6th grade students have a rich day with five academic classes, a studio class and two advisory periods a week to support their needs transitioning to a middle school setting as this first year in a 6-12 school can be overwhelming.
