I teach curious and energetic third graders at a small public school in a densely populated, high-poverty neighborhood in Southern California. Many of my students' parents have limited literacy skills, thereby impacting my students' readerly life in multiple ways. My students love to read, but their options for obtaining books are very limited. Due to the city's budget cuts, nearby public libraries have reduced their evening and weekend hours, thus impacting my students' families' opportunities for access to free literature. Also, there are NO bookstores in our neighborhood. There are multiple liquor stores within a 2-mile radius of our school, but bookstores are nowhere to be found. My students need to be immersed in books every day, but access to high quality books is very limited outside our classroom. Therefore, I must do whatever it takes to provide my students with books. And you can help me!
