Books Change Lives!
Funded Aug 19, 2011I can't thank you enough for your generous donation. I teach an intensive reading class. That means that my students are at the bottom of the reading scale. The program I teach is language based, so it's basically geared toward teaching the foundational language skills students need in order to become successful readers. Although the program does make use of informational text, the students aren't really exposed to literature. Your gift has allowed them to receive an additional component to their education which is truly helping to open up their minds. For the first time these kids are seeing books in a whole new light. Books are no longer the barrier that keeps them from learning, but an exciting opportunity to explore new and exciting worlds. They now have a reason to improve their reading skills.
Thank you for giving of what you have been so blessed to receive yourself!”

Window to the World
Funded Dec 12, 2008I can't tell you how thrilled and excited I am about receiving funding for my classroom! At the beginning of the year, before I even knew about DonorsChoose.org, I offered my students extra credit for donating their used books to help build our classroom library. Although the response was great, most of the donated books were copies of the novels they read in their Language Arts class during the previous year. Others were books they read and treasured as young elementary school students. As you can imagine, some were not in the very best shape (torn covers, missing pages, etc.). Despite all of that, the desire to check books out of the small classroom library we were able to build was overwhelming. I started to keep a makeshift log of the books that were being checked out, and I was able to compile information on the kind of books that my middle school students were interested in. As a result, when I applied to DonorsChoose.org it was very easy for me to select the perfect collection of books to build a solid foundation for our library. Now, the hard part is going to be containing my students’ excitement as they wait for their books to arrive!
One last thing that I would like to share is that right before I sat down to write this small token of my appreciation, I told my students about the GREAT news. Most of them couldn’t believe that someone actually cared enough to fund our library. They were very surprised yet extremely appreciative. And this couldn’t have come at a better time. This week, the theme for our character education program is kindness and the students have been involved in several activities designed to instill this quality and provide the ability to recognize it in others. How amazing it was to receive the notice from DonorsChoose.org at such an opportune time! What better way to learn about kindness than to witness it first hand! May your generous act of kindness be returned to you many times over!!!!
