My students are from middle class families that live in homes neighboring the school. Most students have learned to read by the time they come to second grade. When they get to second grade, they begin to focus on learning how to comprehend and make meaning of what they have read. Some students are still not quite ready to focus on those skills and therefore still need basic phonics instruction. There are also those students who need to be challenged and given opportunities for enrichment. This means that the ability levels of the students in my class can range from a kindergarten level to well above second grade. My school's population is around 450 students. We have students in kindergarten through the fifth grade, with about eighteen to twenty-one students per class. We like to emphasize the importance of working together as a community and creating a respectful and safe environment for everyone to learn and have fun!
